A Distraction of the Boys

Despite Tony Alarcon’s insistence and clear reasoning, the school official refused to agree that Demetra’s clothes fell within the dress code. When pressed, he gave a rather unsatisfactory explanation as to why the 13-year-old could not wear the blue romper or tank top and shorts. “[The school official] said the clothes were distracting to boys,” Tony recalled.

While Tony objected strongly to the school’s determination, he had no other choice but to provide his daughter with a long pair of leggings. It may have covered Demetra’s legs, but it certainly made her feel quite uncomfortable in the hot weather. When the 13-year-old returned home that night, Tony discovered this was not the first time Demetra had been singled out! The fight was far from over…
