What “B” Meant

After another few hours of research and confirming, Gail Lukasik finally figured out the mystery behind the strange letter “B” next to many of the names on the list, including her grandfather’s. You see, in those times, the Louisiana census, along with many other states, used the letter “B” to denote a person of color, meaning “black.”
However, Lukasik could simply not believe that her grandfather had been a person of color – her mother was as white as a cloud! Lukasik felt utterly out of words. Once again, she knew what she needed to find next: Rita’s birth certificate. Only that document would prove things one way or another.
