Even though she didn’t understand at first why her mother would decide to live in a web of lies, Lukasik now understands that her mother had good reason for it. “I know my mother wanted a better life for herself. And the way she saw that was to pass for white,” Lukasik explained.
“She would have more opportunities for employment and in society in general. To do that, she had to turn her back on her mixed-race heritage and leave her family behind. It was a big sacrifice. She could never live her true authentic self,” said Gail. But, believe it or not, Lukasik is not the only woman to discover a family truth in the strangest of places…
