Letting Go of Her Heritage

When Rita and Harold first met and fell in love, he had no idea she was black. Her makeup meant that no one but Rita’s parents knew the truth. As the two continued to fall in love, he revealed his darker side: he was extremely racist and would often slander Rita’s race in front of her, unknowingly. However, Rita had already fallen head over heels. She confessed to her daughter that she still wanted to be with Harold, despite his views and the fact that she would need to leave her family.
So, at the end of World War II, Rita made the hard decision to leave her parents behind. Sadly Camille Kilbourne and Azema Frederick, Rita’s parents, never heard from their daughter again.
