In case you forgot, the guest list of Diana’s wedding and reception caused just as much of a stir as Middleton and Markle’s. The union between Diana and Charles was attended by every crowned head in Europe – with one notable expectation: King Juan Carlos of Spain. Carlos remained the King of Spain from 1975 and 2014, when he decided to abdicate.
Believe it or not, the Spanish King did not attend because Diana and Charles planned on spending their honeymoon on Gibraltar, which is a disputed territory between Britain and Spain. In order not to create a political crisis the King, therefore, decided to abstain from the wedding.
