An American Crowd

Since Meghan Markle is an American actress who then lived in Canada, her and Harry’s guest list took on a more international tone than many other royal weddings. Serena Williams with her husband Alexis Ohanian, Pippa and James Middleton, Oprah, and George Clooney are just some of the celebrities who arrived to share the special day.
On the other hand, Kate and William’s wedding looked far more traditional: the guest list was primarily British, with a few international sprinkles throughout. It seems Markle and Harry were always meant to be different! They even did the delicious treat at the end of the night a little different…
Fruitcake vs. Sponge Cake

You might not expect it, but wedding cakes can actually reveal quite a bit about royal weddings! Just take Princess Diana, for instance: a traditional, eight-tier cake that reminds us of the traditional wedding she enjoyed. Likewise, William and Middleton’s conventional fruitcake and chocolate cakes show how they respected Diana’s influence and impact on their lives.
Of course, rebels Markle and Harry needed Claire Ptak of London’s Violet Bakery to make them something very different. So, instead of fruitcake, a longtime tradition at royal weddings, they opted for an elderflower sponge cake. As you can see, the couple always wanted to separate themselves from the rest of the Royal Family.
