Johnny Unitas, Baltimore Colts – Poor Spending Habits

Johnny “The Golden Arm” Unitas was an American football player who played for the former Baltimore Colts. While on the team, he earned the NFL MVP title three times, in ’59, ’64, and ’67. Even more impressive, the athlete also held the record for most consecutive games with a touchdown pass for 52 years. Even though he made quite a sizable fortune from his outstanding career, Unitas too ended up losing it all.
In 1991, Unitas filed for bankruptcy, and he and his wife also filed for protection against creditors. Reportedly, Unitas had a $3.2 million in debt and was working with banks and creditors to try to settle his debt. However, in the end, he wound up broke and financially ruined. Sadly, Unitas never recovered before his death in 2002.
