Nobody in the crowd was a certified wildlife pro, but they did know elephants. When you’ve spent years living near them, you pick up the basics fast. That’s why it felt extra worrying to watch her dig and dig, hour after hour, without stopping. People gathered, whispering and staring. What on earth was she trying to get to?

Theories started flying. Maybe she’d sensed something the rest of the herd hadn’t. Curiosity was everywhere, but so was nerves. Folks crept closer anyway, careful not to push their luck, knowing an injured elephant can lash out in a heartbeat.
