20. Wedding Bells Ring

On July 9, 1947, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip made their engagement public. We write “public” because, in truth, the two and become engaged a year before. However, Elizabeth’s father, King George VI, would not allow the pair to announce until Elizabeth turned 21-years-old in April of 1947. Meanwhile, in the passing year, Philip gave Elizabeth a massive, 3-carat round diamond ring that included side diamonds set in platinum.
Finally, after a year, in May 1947, the royal couple announced their engagement. What followed would be one of the most-watched and talked about royal weddings of all time. In fact, some think it can never be beaten!
