Ashcraft found only one silver lining while looking over the devastated yacht: the rudder still worked. She also managed to find a little food that had not fallen overboard. However, for her first few days alone at sea, Ashcraft did not eat a single thing. The loss of her fiance and fear of the loss of her life destroyed any hunger the woman had in her stomach.

While Ashcraft may have lost her fiancee during that horrible hurricane, she says that he was right there alongside her as she fought to survive. In fact, the young woman recalls hearing a voice encouraging her to continue her journey. With her makeshift sail and ample skills, Ashcraft hoped she could make it out of the ocean…
