Navigating New Norms
Divorce was once stigmatized, particularly affecting women, who often faced significant social and economic disadvantages post-separation. Traditionally, the male-centric family registration system and societal expectations limit women to financial stability and child custody after divorce.
Today, it has been gradually changing, specifically in societal attitudes and putting less burden. There is a growing recognition of women’s rights, and changes in family law have improved their chances of receiving child support and custody. Japan even has its unique divorce ceremonies where couples can symbolically end their marriage by smashing their wedding rings with a gavel, turning a new leaf in a culturally significant way.
