Love Wrapped in Chocolate
Valentine’s Day in Japan comes with a delicious twist: women give chocolate to men! This unique tradition started in the 1950s, inspired by a marketing campaign that suggested chocolate as a way for women to express their feelings. Fast forward to the 2020’s, and it’s a booming annual event.
“Giri-choco”, or obligation chocolate, is given to male colleagues and friends, and “honmei-choco,” the true love chocolate, is reserved for boyfriends, husbands, or that special crush. From exquisite artisan chocolates to homemade confections, the type of chocolate chosen says a lot about the relationship. It’s a sweet way to turn the tables on traditional courtship, making February 14th a day to watch out for!
