The club owners, Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager, were known for their eccentricities, including welcoming animals into the club.
During Valentine’s Day 1979, the lobby was transformed into metal fish ponds, which, due to a surprise inspection, had to be hastily emptied onto 54th Street, leaving an odd scene of frozen goldfish on the curb the next morning. It was also a place where dogs roamed the dance floor, and there were reportedly three beloved pooches.
