John Kerry and Teresa Heinz – Together Since 1995
John Kerry and Teresa Heinz’s paths first crossed at an Earth Day rally in 1990, but it wasn’t until they met again at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro that their relationship began to flourish. Teresa, then a member of a State Department delegation, and John, a Senator, started courting in 1993. Their relationship led to marriage on May 26, 1995, in Nantucket, Massachusetts.
Teresa, who chose to remain a registered Republican until John’s presidential run in 2004, retained her name as Teresa Heinz for personal and political reasons. Her decision to use Teresa Heinz Kerry in political contexts was a pragmatic choice, blending her identity with her role in John’s political life.
